St. Damien Joseph de Veuster of Moloka'i

Damien de Veuster, from Belgium, joined the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (known also as the Picpus Fathers), and was a missionary to Lepers on the Hawaiian Island of Moloka'i arriving on the feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 1864.  He was known as a man with an intense interior life and deep simplicity.  He contracted leperosy in 1885 and died among his fellow lepers on Moloka'i on April 15, 1889 at the age of 49. St. Damien was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1995.  Damien said, " I make myself a leper with the lepers, to gain all for Jesus Christ."
