OUR VOWS
The Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross is a community of Brothers united in the mission of Jesus to serve people and their needs. We are called to community life as we share in prayer and service to others.

The Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross is a community of Brothers united in the mission of Jesus to serve people and their needs. We are called to community life as we share in prayer and service to others. We look to the example of St. Francis of Assisi as we follow Jesus each day. Because of our vowed life as Franciscans we give witness and service to humanity in the educational, healthcare, and pastoral ministries of the Church.

The Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross came as missionaries from our Motherhouse, located in Germany, to the United States in 1924. The Brothers went first to New Orleans, Louisiana, to establish an orphanage. At the invitation of Bishop James A. Griffin, then Bishop of Springfield, Illinois, our American foundation in Springfield began in 1928. Ten of our Brothers came from Germany to establish a Trade School for young men. The Brothers wanted to provide a Catholic, home-like environment for their students. For the community, they built St. James Monastery, fulfilling a desire to live a religious life as a witness of their consecrate life.

As they began to develop their ideals to be a self-supporting Monastery, and with the guidance and blessing of our Motherhouse and the local Bishop, the Brothers began to plan for the future as true followers of our founder Brother James Wirth in the spirit of St. Francis.

From 1928 to the present, the Franciscan Brothers have been located in the Diocese of Springfield. Other members of our Community also provide Franciscan witness and service to the people of God in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and in the Diocese of Madison, in the USA.  We are united with our Brothers in Germany  www.franziskanerbrueder.de , who reside in various houses in the Diocese of Trier. We are mindful of the needs of our Bishops and the needs of the Dioceses and are willing to assist where we are needed.

Our Mission:
As members of the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross, we strive to live Gospel values inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi and guided by the life and rule of our founder Brother James Wirth.  Our mission is to be of service to the Church and the people of God by providing care in a joyful giving of self to the sick, the suffering and those in need.

Our Vision:
We, the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross, choose to live a fraternal life based on Gospel values in the prophetic spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and of our founder, Brother James Wirth.  With Jesus Christ as our Brother, we live as Brothers with one another, with the entire human family, and with all creation.  Calling ourselves and one another to continuous conversion of heart based on trust, we commit ourselves to a life of Brotherhood: simplicity, poverty and humility.

As a Brotherhood of vowed men of the Catholic Church, we respond with our diverse gifts in a spirit of collaboration and of mutual service to the needs of others, especially youth, the sick, and the suffering.

Filled with faith and hope, we seek to participate in the Spirit’s action in the world, and aware of a response to human needs of our own time, we trust in the goodness of God to lead us as we embrace the future with hope.
